CPSC: PELOTON TREAD+ TREADMILLS HAVE BEEN CONNECTED WITH DEATHS, INJURIES, BRAIN INJURIES, BROKEN BONES, AND FACIAL TRAUMA IN SMALL CHILDREN.

Peloton Tread+ Linked to Injuries and Deaths

WASHINGTON DC – The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued an urgent safety warning after the agency received one fatal accident event and dozens of injuries to children who were violently dragged underneath the Peloton Tread+ (also known as the “Tread”). Peloton Interactive, Inc., the manufacturer of the affected treadmill, has recalled its Peloton Tread+ treadmill exercise equipment. The CPSC has found that public health and safety risks required an immediate warning about the hazard.

A fatal incident report posted on SaverProducts.gov states that a three-year-old boy was entrapped under a Peloton Tread Plus. The boy was discovered pulseless and not breathing by the boy’s father. The boy was resuscitated but had a significant brain injury. The boy sustained tread marks on his back which match the treadmill’s slats. The boy suffered a neck injury and petechiae on his face, which was “likely from occlusion of blood flow.”

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) stated that they were aware of approximately 39 incidents, including one fatality, and the agency says there are also reports of at least one pet and objects getting sucked underneath the treadmill. The CPSC’s announcement was issued one month after Peloton revealed that they had received a report concerning its Tread+ treadmill and the death of a small child. The agency also released a video of one child getting stuck under the treadmill while it was running. The CPSC is continuing its investigation into all known events of injury or death linked to the Peloton Tread+.

The CPSC has advised purchasers to discontinue using the Peloton Tread+ treadmill if pets or small children are present. The government safety agency also stated that if purchasers want to continue using their Peloton Tread+, “they should only do so in a locked room and they should keep other objects away.” The CPSC also stated that the treadmill should be unplugged when not in use by an adult and to keep the safety key out of the reach of kids.

Peloton issued a press release stating that the company “Refutes Consumer Product Safety Commission’s claims” and describes the CPSC’s press release concerning its Peloton Tread+ as being “one-sided” because they claim the CPSC’s report is “inaccurate and misleading.”

Senator Richard Blumenthal, chair of the U.S. Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Data Security, stated that “It is unconscionable that Peloton would obstruct the Commission at every step of its investigation given this disturbing evidence about one of its principal products.”
